Helping The Visually Impaired Enjoy Exercise

Helping The Visually Impaired Enjoy Exercise

Achilles International is a not-for-profit organisation who provide guidance and support for people with disabilities including visual impairment who wish to walk/run and enjoy the outdoors. Founded in New York in 1983, it now comprises more than 100 chapters across 6 continents including Australasia. It caters to all levels of fitness and ability, from the weekend walker to the marathon runner. Volunteer guides escort walkers/runners (see picture) for approximately 1 hour, helping them navigate the terrain and avoid obstacles. The role of the guide is to keep the walker/runner safe at all times, thus allowing them to exercise with confidence. Participation as an able-bodied guide allows you to help others less fortunate than yourself, improves your own fitness and is a way of meeting some very inspirational people. Volunteers are always welcome.
